Twelve hours after his speech at Independence Hall, Lincoln slipped into disguise. He already looked different from the man elected three months earlier, having grown a beard (at the suggestion of Grace Bedell, a young girl from Westfield, New York). Replacing his stovepipe hat with a soft felt one and pulling up the collar of a large overcoat, Lincoln, escorted by two heavily armed bodyguards, took a special, single-car night train to Washington, where, on March 4, 1861, he was inaugurated the sixteenth president of the now sadly misnamed United States of America.

While the Washington Star proclaimed it “the most superb affair of its kind ever seen here,” one senator fumed, “Are the President and Mrs. ” At the last minute, Mrs. Lincoln nearly cancelled the ball when eleven-year-old Willie came down with a “bilious fever,” probably typhoid fever caused by the drinking water the White House drew from the Potomac River. When their doctor pronounced the boy “in no immediate danger,” the ball went on, the Lincolns disappearing several times to check on Willie.

The family then moved to another farm on 300 acres on the Nolin River near Hodgenville in Hardin County, Kentucky. Their crude log cabin was typical of the time: eighteen feet long and sixteen feet wide with a dirt floor, no windows, bear-skin rugs, and mattresses stuffed with corn husks. It was crowded, but there was plenty of food and game and wood for the fire. In that cabin, on Sunday, February 12, 1809, the future president was born. A year later, the Lincolns packed their belongings and moved again, this time ten miles away, to start clearing 230 acres on Knob Creek.
