That’s a word Europeans used for a type of person they were surprised to find in most Native American groups—people we might call gay or lesbian or transgendered. ’ They are considered to be special, gifted; traditionally, they played special roles in group rituals or decisions.

If you ask what causes homosexuality, do you also ask what causes heterosexuality, and why or why not? How many kinds of sexuality are there, and how well do they fit into the categories we use? What kinds of relational patterns have you seen between women and men, men and men, women and women? What kinds of relational patterns would you like in your own life or community? What do you mean by “man” and “woman,” and how well do your working definitions cover your experience of people? Of the many things that sex can do (such as give pleasure, enact violence, express love, make babies, explore fantasies, spread diseases, or seal a commitment), which if any do you think it must do in order to be moral and why?

Besides, in this one course, I had figured out how and when to come out, always a large part of the struggle. In the first class, we would always introduce ourselves (at my suggestion) by sharing something that we wanted the group to know. By way of breaking the ice, I would start by saying three or four things about myself, among them the fact that I am lesbian. Inevitably, several students would then also mention something about their sexualities, and the topic would get integrated seamlessly into the rest of the course.
